BRODERICK BEST
The hot-headed, eldest son of the former Head Wizard (that he's in a perpetual rivalry with) who is as brilliant as he is argumentative. Historian and professor by trade, he accepted the Head Librarian position while on sabbatical because he doesn't trust his father's involvement in anything, and he's a slut for new knowledge. A talented Medium (necromancer), Broderick summons/ banishes/convenes spirits on the regular, which is helpful for your research needs, as much as his.
Intense, passionate, sociable, sarcastic, and always direct. He's incredibly loyal if you're a friend, but also suffers from older brother syndrome and can be insufferable and overbearing because he thinks he knows best.
His husband died several years ago and he uses his powers to talk to him sometimes, which is totally healthy and not at all a bad idea.

appearance
Tall, intense, scruffy. Handsome and disheveled in a way that suggests he broods on the moors and keeps a lighthouse somewhere or that he just doesn't give a shit. Which would be believable except for how vain he is about his hair.
Tattoo of Ogham rune ruis on his left forearm to help amplify his death magic, and the tinne rune on his right forearm for protection and control.

background
- Broderick grew up in Carmathen, Wales, the eldest son of Bonaventure (corporate shill and massive prick) and Angharad (brilliant academic) Best. With a family pedigree that allegedly descended from Merlin himself, both parents had ensured that the Best family was respected and well regarded in wizarding circles, barely present themselves as parents in the pursuit of their success except to "motivate" their children to do the same. As the eldest of 5, Broderick took his older brother role and sometimes, defacto parenting role, very serious. Too seriously, if you ask any of his siblings. Still, the Best siblings learned early on that it was just better to rely on one another.
- Self motivated and proactive (whether by spite, the pursuit of knowledge, or anger)Broderick had been marked as a brilliant and curious child, and initially carted out by both parents like a dog and pony show, especially when his gifts as a medium made themselves known. He's never had a good relationship with his father who Broderick regards as a capitalist asshole and general prick - and yeah, he'll grouchily admit that that may factor in a lot of the major decisions he's made in his life. Unselfconscious in the public eye, and happiest when he's meeting an intellectual challenge (often loudly), Broderick was no stranger to notoriety as a Best by the time he followed his mother into Academia and became a respected historian, researcher, and history professor.
- Meeting Miles was admittedly a cliche. Handsome, bemused human librarian is accosted by a belligerent, pretentious wizard academic in a delicious meet ugly that ends up with them making out in the stacks. Miles hadn't a touch of magic in him or experience with the supernatural, and yet had embraced Broderick's entire world with barely a blink. They'd been married within a few months, young and 25 and without the approval of either parent. For 10 years they'd been eachothers person, even when 5 years into marriage Miles was diagnosed with the cancer that eventually would take his life, no matter the magical interventions they attempted. Widower at 35 was not something Broderick had been prepared for, even with those last few years together. He's handled his grief so well though, people like to comment, two years later and he seems to be doing so well. And he is doing well, Broderick is doing completely fine. Life goes on.
- Broderick threw himself into his work for about a year or so, but even he could tell that it was maybe time for a break from teaching. He'd just taken a short sabbatical (not for grieving purposes, it was just a natural time for a break to really focus on research) when his father approached him with an invitation. More of a backhanded insult and a goading challenge than an invitation of course, but he effectively lured Broderick in with Byron and intellectual curiosity. And if Broderick accepted the position of librarian, to assist others with research while doing his own writing, it had nothing to do with Miles.
- It's not like he's maybe been communicating with Miles' spirit sometimes, or taking some risks where his powers are concerned. He's totally fine and looking forward to whatever this bullshit society is, because that's what it has to be. Bullshit. His father doesn't dabble in anything less, and Broderick's not going to let him drag Byron into it.
miscellaneous trivia
- Has a talent for getting kicked out of bars, even a bakery once
- His familiar is a Tawny Owl named Arian, who may somehow be bitchier and more protective than Broderick.
- Pretends that reality tv is beneath him, but he watches soap operas and secretly binges real housewives of llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch
- Loves to camp and hike, his regular home is a small farmhouse in the Welsh countryside
- Convenes a ghost book club once a month - membership varies each time (depends on who Broderick is able to summon), but Lord Byron was banned a long time ago for sexually harassing literally everyone.
- Has been secretly communicating with his dead husband, Miles, from time to time. These summonings aren't frequent, and the first time was completely unintentional, but Broderick has been using them as a crutch instead of processing his grief properly. He's getting riskier in his communing because of it.
